PRODUCTION WITH PEDIGREE

Whether you've got a track that needs finishing or an idea that needs building from scratch — this is where it gets made properly.

Brett Shaw has been producing, mixing and engineering music for over 15 years — working across major label and independent releases that have amassed over 5 billion streams worldwide.

He co-produced Foals' albums Everything Not Saved Will Be Lost Parts 1 & 2 — the band's first No.1 album, Mercury Prize nominated, Q Award Album of the Year. He contributed production and writing to Florence + The Machine's High As Hope.

On the independent side, Brett produced and mixed albums for Izal (58 million streams) and Ewan J Phillips (19 million streams) — proving that world-class results don't require a major label budget.

Known for his flexibility across genres and his ability to fit his skill set around whatever the music requires — from building tracks from scratch to helping a band capture their best performance.

FINISHING PRODUCTION

Have you recorded or produced music yourself — a home recording, a demo, or a track made with AI — but feel it could be better? Labels use finishing producers to work on tracks artists and writers have made — and it can make all the difference.

Working with a finishing producer and mixer can help with things like improving sounds, re-recording vocals with the best microphones, replacing samples or soft synths for better ones, running sounds through tape machines, and replacing plugins with real outboard gear in one of London's best-equipped studios.

This has become even more relevant with the rise of AI generation tools like Suno and Udio. The market is flooding with AI tracks — and they all share the same tell-tale signatures: over-smooth transients, a lifeless low-mid, uncanny stereo imaging and a polished-but-dead quality that listeners are already learning to spot. Finishing production can fix this. Running the track through real outboard, tape and valves, re-recording vocals with a U47 or Telefunken 251, replacing weak elements with real playing, and adding the dynamic movement and human feel that AI simply cannot generate — this is what turns an AI sketch into a record that can actually compete.

STARTING FROM SCRATCH

Help with full production is considered based on the type of music and whether Brett feels he can genuinely bring something to it.

The word production takes on different meanings depending on the genre. With bands, the song is usually written and it's about arrangement, structure, tempo and sonics. With artists like Florence, it might mean building a track from a simple idea upwards.

It's even possible to work remotely — sending tracks back and forth. Some of the Ewan J Phillips album was done this way during lockdown.

If you listen to the styles of music most often done at the studio in the playlists below, it should give you a good idea of what's possible.

"I get asked to do a lot of projects, though I will be honest and let you know if I'm the right person for the job. I don't think there is any point attempting to produce something you don't love — it just won't work. If I think I can improve it, I will."

— Brett Shaw

"With an artist like Florence, she might come up with a simple one-finger piano part, her vocals and some tapped rhythms and I'll help build the track from there. With a band like Foals, they come with their own parts so it's more about sonics and picking the best takes. It helps to play a wide range of instruments and know the fundamentals of recording."
